Sludgehammers honor Francis Ouimet
The Sludgehammers of Palm Coast played their annual Ouimet Day Golf Tournament in Feb. 25, at the Pine Lakes Golf Club. The group of local golfers, who meet to play twice a week, conduct this annual event to pay homage to Francis Ouimet, the first amateur golfer to win the US Open (1913), upsetting some of the best golfers in the world.
The Sludgehammers played in the traditional golf attire for that period with knickers, knee socks, white shirt, tie and golf cap. Tony Maltese shot his age (89) on the opening day, and was named the 2015 Sludgehammer Champion after the three rounds. Maltese also won last year’s championship.
Pak’s Karate Academy Belt Testing Awards
Pak’s Karate Academy awarded students with their respective Belt Level Achievement at the First Quarter Belt Testing of 2015. Grandmaster Song Ki Pak was in Palm Coast to administer belts.

FPC’s speed leads to fourth straight Top 2 finish
The Flagler Palm Coast boys’ track team picked up a second-place finish, thereby finishing in the Top 2 all of their meets so far, this time at Bolles Bulldog Classic on March 6, in Jacksonville. FPC competed against more than 50 schools around the state.
Notable finishes included: 4x100 meter relay-FPC first, 4x400 meter relay-FPC first, 400 meter dash-Dominic Green first and Marcel Williams third, Pole vault-Timothy Patrick and Mark Bertrand third and fifth, 4x800 meter relay-FPC third, 100 meter dash-Que’Shaun Byrd, 800 meter run-Ka’Deem Wynn fifth, 200 meter dash-Jimmie Robinson second and Ra Blanding seventh.
The Lady Bulldogs placed sixth overall for its fourth straight Top 10 finish to begin the season. Notable finishers for the girls included: High jump-Anna walls seventh, pole vault-Chase Kroul 10th, Shot put-Alantra McFadden ninth, girls 4x800 meter relay-FPC 10th, 100 meter hurdles- Devonne Friday second and Josie Davis ninth, 100 meter dash-Emari Williams-eighth, 4x100 meter relay-FPC second, 300 meter hurdles-Devonne Friday second, 4x400 meter relay-FPC fifth.
Palm Coast players play last high school game together
Matanzas’ Nick Weber and FPC’s Nate Monsanto played in their last high school soccer game together on the North Team in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-Star /All-State Event on March 6-7, in Ocala. Monsanto played center back and center mid and Weber played left mid and left back.
The two have been friends and club teammates since they were 9 years old, and according to Rich Weber, Matanzas’ head coach, it was “great to see them play together on the field in their last high school game.”
