Parents, teachers and siblings rallied around the fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade boys and girls running in the Rymfire Elementary School 5K Saturday, March 14. In its ninth year, the 5K is the big year-end culmination for the school’s running club.
The eight-week program led by Coach Rob Cerasi leads the group through twice-a-week workouts building up to the 5K, which is 3.1 miles.
“This was the hardest working and most talented group of runners I’ve had in nine years,” Cerasi said, adding that there were 90 runners in the program this year.
The running club is just one of the 26 after-school activities that now incorporate the school’s flagship of medical sciences, health and fitness into their programs.
“We want to make sure our students become lifelong learners of personal health and good fitness,” said Rymfire Elementary Principal Paula St. Francis. “Running club is the perfect example because you don’t have to pay a lot of money to belong. They gain this momentum with the teachers and the sponsors at our school with hope that they go on to middle school and high school and continue being runners.”
Cerasi said it took many supporters and volunteers to make the club a success, including teacher Heather Doutrick, who wrote a grant for the clubs start/finish banner and water bottles.
