The road to professional motocross starts at Pax Trax, on U.S. 1 in Bunnell. At least that’s what the Hawkins brothers are hoping.
Hayden, 13, a seventh-grader at Buddy Taylor Middle School, and his brother, Hunter, 16, a sophomore at Flagler Palm Coast High School, competed March 8, at sixth-annual Ricky Carmichael Daytona Amateur Supercross. Both brothers want to pursue racing professionally.
Their parents are supportive. Fortunately, while their father, Christopher, has seen the boys crash before, their mother, Stacy, has not, “which is a good thing,” she said.
The boys work hard, training after school and on weekends.
“They don’t have time to get into trouble,” Christopher Hawkins said. He added that although the hobby is expensive, the family will continue to support them, as long as their remain dedicated to it.
At race time, the engines sound like a swarm of bees, and the air is filled with anticipation, not to mention the mixture of gasoline and oil.
Unfortunately, Hayden fractured his ankle in practice and was unable to race.
Hunter had broken his wrist just eight weeks earlier in the season and had only been able to practice four times before race day, but he was ready to race and was excited to be back on the track. He placed seventh in his race, and is now going to concentrate on his training for the Loretta Lynn’s Qualifier in Tennessee in July which is for the national championship for amateurs.
