Imagine Spirit Team wins grand championship

The Imagine Spirit Team, coached by Wendy Wright, won two cheerleading titles at the Reach the Beach National Championship Saturday, March 21, in Daytona.

The Mini Squad which consists of 24 cheerleaders placed first in the elementary division, and the Mighty Squad, consisting of 23 cheerleaders, won the junior-high division and the Grand Champions for the overall highest score for their level of competition, which placed them into the U.S. Finals April 11, in Pensacola.

“These cheerleaders are motivated and dedicated athletes,” Wright said. “They practice 10 hours a week leading up to competition. They don’t have helmets or pads; they only have each other.”

Lady Pirates get fifth straight win

Matanzas began the season 1-10 and has since won five straight games (six of the last seven), outscoring opponents 45-12.
The Lady Pirates’ latest defeated foe was Palatka, whom they dropped 9-4 Thursday, March 19.

Brooklynn Jimeson picked up the win for Matanzas, striking out seven in seven innings. She also went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Camille Leake also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Pirates will next play in the “Doc for Life” softball tournament Friday, March 27, at Shocker Park in Ocala.

Matanzas baseball avenges loss

After losing to Deltona 2-1 on March 17, the Pirates quickly returned the favor to the Wolves, winning 4-2 March 19.
With both teams struggling to score a run in the first three innings, Matanzas picked up all its runs in the bottom of the fourth and held on to win.

Senior Braeden Ward went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and John Calmbacher also went 2-for-3 with a run. Bobby Sparling got a hit, an RBI and scored. Donovan Brady picked up the win, striking out three.

Next up: Pine Ridge March 31.

Pirates’ lacrosse blanks Gainesville

Coach Jeff Goren’s bunch didn’t allow Gainesville to score one time in Matanzas’ 13-0 shutout on March 20, at Matanzas.
The Pirates got off to a quick start, netting five in the opening quarter. They repeated that score in the second.

James Mayer scored three goals, and Gunner Parson netted three and helped on another three goals. Storm Schalit also scored three goals and assisted two others.

Goalie Matt Gutierrez had four saves on the night to help the Pirates get its eighth win of the season.

Blue Skies LAX tourney: March 29

Blue Skies Lacrosse founders and coaches, Oliver and LeAnn Johnston, are a husband-wife team with over 40 years’ combined lacrosse experience. Together they have coached lacrosse from the collegiate to youth level, both men’s and women’s.

Blue Skies Lacrosse, the only youth development program in Flagler County, will be hosting a home tournament for the first time Sunday, March 29, at Wadsworth Park in Flagler Beach. The Johnstons take pride in teaching the youth the game, along with teaching values, morals and sportsmanship. They are very excited about hosting this tournament and hope the community will come, support and learn about the fastest growing game in the country.
