Palm Coast author Dr. Carol Thomas, joined Daytona Beach authors Dr. David B. Axelrod and Lenny Schneir, to accept a Florida Book Award Gold Medal last month for a book they wrote together.
Their book, “”Merlin Stone Remembered,” won gold in the category of Best Non-fiction Book by Florida authors. It recounts the life and work of pioneer feminist artist and scholar, Merlin Stone, who began her visits to Daytona Beach in 1999 and became a full-time resident in 2005. Stone, best known for her book “When God Was a Woman,” passed away in February, 2011.
Schneir, her life-partner for 34 years, recruited Axelrod and Thomas to help him with the book.
“It started while I prepared a speech for a memorial service for Merlin,” Schneir said. “Then, that went so well, it blossomed into a full, 332-page book.”
The book was released December, 2014, by Llewellyn Worldwide publishers.
Two hundred ten books were entered in the annual contest and nine won gold in their separate categories. The Florida Book Awards are considered one of the best state competitions in the U.S. The trio of authors will also be featured in a segment already recorded for public television station WFSU.

Irish Social Club donates to hospice
The Irish Social Club of Palm Coast presented its annual golf tournament proceeds to the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House, Florida Hospital HospiceCare Foundation, at the club’s monthly April meeting. The 2015 proceeds of $2,800 bring the total contribution to Florida Hospital HospiceCare to an estimated $25,000. Hospice representatives in attendance were Bill Tol, and Elmer and Pat Stainbrook. The Irish Social Club has held a golf tournament since 2003 with the proceeds designated to the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House each year. Participants, numbering 65 in 2015, do not have to be members of the Irish Social Club, but simply have a desire to play golf and contribute to the community.

Florida Hospital Flagler honors volunteers
In honor of National Healthcare Volunteer Week, April 12-18, the five Florida Hospitals in Volusia and Flagler counties recognized the volunteers who donate their time and talents to the hospitals.
On April 16, Florida Hospital Flagler hosted a volunteer appreciation luncheon at Halifax Plantation for more than 130 volunteers. During the event, which included lunch and music by Al Belletto, volunteer Barbara Clutter received the 2015 Mission Award for exemplifying the hospital’s mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ to patients and families.
“This special week presents an opportunity to celebrate the everyday people who accomplish extraordinary things through service,” said Daryl Tol, Florida Hospital Volusia/Flagler CEO. “These community members are essential to the healthcare team as they give of their time freely and ask for nothing in return. We are so blessed to have such an incredible group of volunteers; they are a precious and important part of our team.”
Florida Hospital Flagler has nearly 300 active volunteers assisting in 25 departments throughout the hospital. Since 2005, the volunteers have provided more than 26,000 free blood pressure checks at the hospital and cared for more than 6,000 guests in the Judith C. Macko Cancer Resource Library, since it opened in 2010. Financially, this organization has donated more than $1 million to the hospital since 1983.
