A 55-year-old Sanchez Avenue resident was arrested on May 18, in Palm Coast, after he shot a .357 Magnum in a residential area, according to a report by a Flagler County Sheriff's Office deputy.
The deputy approached the man, identified as Joseph Perugia, and asked him to put the gun down, but he said he wouldn’t. The deputy took cover behind his vehicle, and finally, Perugia surrendered. Perugia later explained, in slurred speech and using “several objects for balance to hold him up,” that a raccoon had been eating his dog food.
Two rounds had been fired, according to the deputy’s investigation. Also, it's a felony for Perugia to have a gun in the first place because he is a convicted felon.
The deputy’s report concludes like this: “It should also be noted that at approximately 7:45 p.m., Joseph called in and asked to speak to a deputy regarding shooting a raccoon that kept eating his dog food. I advised Joseph that unless he was in fear for his life, then he should not attempt to shoot it. He then asked, ‘Well, what should I do?’ I then told him to move the dog food to a place that the raccoon could not get to it, and then the line disconnected.”
Perugia was arrested on multiple counts.
