Someone must have forgotten to tell Mainland that their game against the University Titans was a spring exhibition. The Buccaneers showed very little mercy in their 17-0 shutout Friday, May 22, at Mainland’s practice field.
For three quarters, Mainland’s future stars played at full speed, scoring on offense and shutting down Lorenzo Lingard, one of the best running backs in the area, on defense. A number of college recruiters swarmed the sidelines, surveying the talent on both teams.
Also, in attendance were the famous Mainland band and a heavy fan base that cheered as if they were watching a high school playoff game. Before, during and after halftime, the band and Assistant Principal Shawn Troutman, who DJ-ed the game, turned the game environment into a party environment.
“We’re just having a good time,” Troutman said. “It’s a family environment, and we’re enjoying football, in the back yard.”
By the numbers: Mainland’s Backup quarterback Cyrus Fagan put on a show for the fans and college recruiters in attendance. He threw touchdown passes to Johnny Barkley, Na’Keevin Atkins and Randy Baker (called back), while also scrambling and rushing for over 40 yards. Peter Beaudet also kicked 32-yard field goal.
In the JV segment, Raymond Horton scored a one-yard touchdown after Jordan Bailey ran 49 yards before getting brought down inside the five-yard line.
