Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida held its 17th-annual Community Banquet Thursday, May 21, at the Daytona Beach Ocean Center and presented a law enforcement officer of the year award to one nominee from Flagler, Putnam, St. Johns and Volusia counties.
Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Cmdr. Steve Brandt was honored as the Flagler County Officer of the Year. The award was based on four specific events, coupled with his 21-year service and professionalism to the FCSO and the citizens of Flagler County.
On Oct. 3, then Sgt. Brandt was responsible in coordinating the search for a missing Flagler County man, who was last seen flying an experimental plane. Brandt’s efforts were instrumental in managing and obtaining personnel, resources and outside agency cooperation; and his determination led the discovery of the crash site.
On Oct. 5, Brandt responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Target pharmacy. He was the shift supervisor working at the time and was able to successfully direct his responding units to stage in the area and establish a perimeter. Due to these efforts, the suspect vehicle was located and the suspect was arrested without incident.
On Oct. 28, after the FCSO received information from the St. Petersburg Police Department indicating that they had information that a homicide suspect wanted from their agency was in the area of the Palm Coast Parkway and Old Kings Road, Brandt once again responded and successfully deployed units in the area. He located the suspect vehicle at a local business and under his command, the suspect was successfully taken into custody without incident.
Brandt is a “Below 100” instructor and is passionate in his presentation to permanently eliminate preventable law enforcement line of duty deaths and injuries through innovative training and awareness. He is also a member of the Narcotics Overdose Prevention & Education (NOPE) Task Force and volunteers to present NOPE to middle school students.
Sheriff James Manfre promoted Brandt to commander on May 13.
“Throughout his career, he has consistently demonstrated exemplary police work and leadership,” Manfre said. “I am extremely proud of Cmdr. Steve Brandt and all of his accomplishments.
