When Sheila Stohr, Ormond Beach resident and member of the Song of the Coast Sweet Adeline Chorus, turned 70 years old, she didn't want any presents. Instead, she invited her Sweet Adeline friends, who had thrown a part for her, to bring diapers and wipes to donate to the Pregnancy Crisis Center in Daytona Beach. Over 30 packages were given to the center.
All creatures great and small were welcomed Nov. 1 at First United Methodist of Ormond Beach for their first ever Blessing of the Animals. Over 150 people along with more than 100 of their pets filled the grounds of the church, and among the blessed were everything from dogs and cats to a horse, a turtle, bunnies, crickets and even two praying mantis egg cases. Reverends Scott Smith and Melynne Rust led the large group in a service complete with everyone joining to sing “All Creatures of Our God and King.” After that they, along with Ormond Beach retired veterinary Dr. Brian Smith, broke off to start the individual blessings. Charms were given out to each animal blessed, to either hang on collars or be placed on their bird cages, aquariums or habitats. Pet Supermarket, Barkle N’ Shine groomer, Great Dawg Rescue, Daytona Beach German Shepherd Rescue and Obedience Club of Daytona were all on hand offering prizes, giveaways, pets for adoption and training tips. The Daytona K9 unit was also there complete with canine cop, Ox. With such a great turn out, the church plans to enlarge the event next year.
Saint Brendan raises money for breast cancer awareness
Saint Brendan's Student Council hosted a "Dress Down in Pink" day to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research. A $1,000 check will be sent to The American Cancer Society.
Thanks to a donation by BJ’s Wholesale Club, Halifax Urban Ministries will be able to distribute turkeys this Thanksgiving to families of three or more. There will be a sign up from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 18, or until they run out. Participants are asked to bring the following to HUM's office at 54 S. Ridgewood Ave.: photo identification, Social Security Cards for everyone in the household and current rental receipt of utility bill with name and correct address. If there are any questions or concerns call 615-1326.
