Flagler Palm Coast Lady Bulldogs made it clear, from the beginning of the game, that Pirate Nation was not about to celebrate another historic rivalry win. They pulled away from the Lady Pirates in the second quarter to win 52-16 Monday, Nov. 16, at FPC.

“It was tough to get the girls going, but we just tried to keep ‘em focused,” FPC coach Javier Bevacqua said. “Sometimes, we play up or down to our competition, and, when I try to play everyone in and out, they never get a rhythm.

The Bulldogs shut out the Pirstes 10-0 in the first quarter, but Matanzas put together a competitive second to go into the half only down 21-10 at the break, behind great rebounding and FPC’s bad jump shooting.

“We knew we had an advantage down there (on the block), so we wanted to run some of our jump-shooting sets,” Bevacqua added. “We could’ve easily just put Tamera (Henshaw) down there and score, but we didn’t want to do that.”

Beginning in the third quarter, FPC turned on its pressure and forced numerous turnovers, which led to frequent fast breaks. The Lady Dawgs only allowed six points in the second half.
