Thanks to the Mid-Florida Jeep Club, 400 families will receive a Thanksgiving dinner. Last year the foundation that had supported HUM’s annual Turkey Provision left the area and the organization was not able to meet the need. HUM and the families they serve will again have a special Thanksgiving Blessing because of the Mid-Florida Jeep Club. The proceeds are from the club's annual Jeep Beach event. HUM is also partnering with Ormond Beach, Port Orange and New Smyrna Beach Communities who have coordinated in their own areas.
The Turkeys and Fixings will be distributed at the HUM Bay Street office in Daytona Nov. 23, but first there will be a sign up day Nov. 18. To sign up you must bring an ID, proof of residency and ID's for everyone in the household and have a family of three or more. Call the office at 252-0156.
Kim Zechnowitz recently witnessed a Great egret catch its meal along the shore of the Halifax River by the Granada Bridge. She later saw a Royal Tern snag its meal out of the water at the beach.
"A good day for our local birds," she said, "no so for the fish."
The Halifax Plantation Women's Golf Association donated $5,144 Nov. 6 to help fight breast cancer locally. To raise these funds, the association hosted a golf tournament scramble with 108 players on Oct. 15.
“I want to thank the community for their overwhelming support," said Peg Iacovelli, golf tournament chairwoman, in a press release. "We have more than exceeded our goals. As an organization, we are so happy to be able to give back to the communities that we live in.”
The funds raised by this third-annual event benefited both Florida Hospital Flagler in Palm Coast and Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach. The donation will help the hospitals’ provide mammograms and other diagnostic procedures to local women in need through the Florida Hospital Pink Army.
The Ormond Beach Police Athletic League recently announced an opportunity for community members and businesses to assist with the enhancement of youth programs in local community. OBPAL will host its annual Golfing for Youth Tournament Dec. 5 at River Bend Golf Club. The tournament is the major fundraiser for OBPAL and all funds raised will support programs for at-risk youth, including: boys and girls basketball, after school tutoring, Do the Right Thing, participation in the State of Florida and National PAL’s Youth Leadership Program, summer camp and many other programs created to help keep kids involved and off the streets.
OBPAL is currently looking for sponsors and players for the tournament. The tournament is an 18-hole scramble, and players may pick their team or be paired with a foursome. The hole-in-one prize is a 2016 Harley Davidson motorcycle Sportster sponsored by Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Harley Davidson. The event kicks off with a 7:30 a.m. with a complimentary breakfast followed by an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The luncheon, door prize give away, 50/50 drawing, and awards ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m. or as soon as the players complete their game. The cost is $75. There will be no garbage or recycling collection on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26. The yard waste pick-up schedule remains unchanged.
