Nearly 80 Girl Scouts in Flagler and St. Johns counties brought an early Thanksgiving, and an afternoon of relaxation and fun, to hard working farm workers in Hastings on Sunday, Nov. 8, at the W.E. Harris Community Center in Hastings. In return, the girls learned a valuable lesson about how food travels from the farm to their kitchen tables.
Ranging in age from kindergarten to high school, the girls served dinner, handed out gift bags, played Bingo and spent time with the farm workers; while learning about their lives and what the farm workers do. Local musician Buffalo Munn provided entertainment.
The troops have been planning and preparing for the event for several months. Since September, the girls have collected hundreds of toiletry items, first aid supplies, and nonperishable food to distribute to workers who attended the event. Some troops donated jackets, sweaters and hats as well as hot plates, backpacks and other in-demand items.
The Girl Scouts efforts support the work of Pie in the Sky, a Hastings-based organization that provides aid to farm workers in the area and support to the community. Pie in the Sky also runs Farm to Family, a mobile farmers market that brings fresh, local produce to areas in need in St. Johns County.
Woody's Bar-B-Q in St. Augustine, owned by Rob and Sharon Erdel, contributed meat for the dinner, and the girls provided side dishes, desserts and drinks to round out the family-style meal. Publix at Plantation Plaza donated reusable and paper bags, which Girl Scouts filled with hygiene supplies, first aid kits, canned food and treats.
“I am so proud of the Girl Scouts in the St. Johns and Flagler community for all of their hard work and community service. These girls put a lot of thought and effort to make their community a better place,” said Girl Scouts of Gateway Council Community 5 leader, Beth Osburn. “It is amazing to see how girls of all ages can find a need in their community and do their best to make an impact and fill that need.”
The DECA chapter at Matanzas High School gave thanks by having a Macaroni and Cheese Food Drive. The club collected 38 boxes of macaroni and cheese, along with other nonperishable food items to be donated to Grace’s Food Pantry in Bunnell for families in need this Thanksgiving season. Vincent Launh headed the project and decorated the boxes for placement in front of the student-led business; Coffee Spot.
The Irish Social Club of Palm Coast is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a Flagler County high school senior of Irish descent. Applications are available at the high school guidance departments. Application deadline is Feb. 1, 2016. February 1, 2016.
