No other team has dealt bigger blows to the Mainland football program than 6A’s current three-year-reigning champions, Miami Central. In 2011, 2013 and 2014, the Rockets spoiled Mainland’s season in the semifinal round, keeping the Bucs out of the 6A State Championship game for a shot at a second school title. This year, the two won’t wait until the semifinals; they will battle this week, in the third round.
“Here we go again,” laughed coach Scott Wilson. “We met from 9:45 a.m. to 7:04 p.m. on Saturday preparing. We don’t want to leave any stones unturned. They are the reigning, defending champs for a reason.”
Mainland’s confidence soared after taking a 14-3 lead, early on in last year’s playoff match, but the Bucs couldn’t hold on and found themselves in tears at the conclusion of the game. This year, with a more-experienced Denzel Houston and company, Wilson hopes the fourth time will be the charm.
“It will be a battle, and those with the best plan shall prevail,” he said. “I love our kids with all of my heart and know they will do what it takes. We want to be up in this game like we were last year and stay there this time!”
