Julien Granger, Luc Labelle and Nuka De Jocas-McCrae smelled some yummy seafood and stopped by Ormond Beach Riverfest Nov. 14 during their Go Fetch Challenge. The trio is kayaking 5,592 miles from Montreal to the tip of the Yucatan Providence.
Jonathan Dills was the only student from Volusia County to make it into the All State Orchestra competition. He will be in Tampa on Jan. 13 for seat placement audition, where last year he placed third. After many hours of rehearsal, the orchestra will perform Jan. 16.
He currently sits cello first chair in the Mainland High School Orchestra, while playing the upright bass also.
Jonathan also joined the Mainland Marching band this school year performing each week and in competitions with the bass drum and holds first chair in the Metropolitan Area Youth Symphony. This summer he is looking into attending Boston University Tanglewood music summer camp and hopes to become a professional cellist.
At the Board of Directors meeting yesterday, the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce elected its officers for 2016. With unanimous support from the Nominating Committee and Board, Teresa Rand was elected chair for 2016. Rand is also the president and CEO of the Volusia Flagler Family YMCA.
The Pathways Elementary Student Council and Florida’s Future Teachers recently sponsored a Thanksgiving Food Drive. Keeping with its “It’s Cool to Care” mission, the school’s students and faculty donated enough canned goods to supply 27 of their families with a Thanksgiving meal. Oasis Church donated the turkeys, and the students at Pathways responded overwhelmingly and had enough goods to donate to the district-wide drive for their Basket Brigade.
For the fifth year in a row, Halifax Humane Society is offering waived fees for all black or predominantly black pets on Nov. 27. All other pets will have their adoption fees reduced by 50%. HHS will open for extended hours from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
All pets will be spayed or neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, have a registered microchip, receive a free month of pet health insurance and more, all at no additional cost to adopters. While adoption fees are free or reduced, donations are encouraged to support the care of all Halifax Humane Society animals.
According to a press release for HHS, anecdotal evidence suggests that black pets can face longer stays at animal shelters and more difficult odds of finding their forever homes for reasons like being harder to capture in photographs, not standing out as much in a kennel and superstitions and folklore surrounding black cats and dogs. Most shelters receive more black pets than any other color, raising the importance of promoting these animals and finding homes.
HHS offered the same special on Black Friday 2014 and was successful in adopting nearly 100 pets. Call 274-4703.
