The Palm Coast Tennis Center hosted a Junior Futures tournament on Saturday, Oct. 3, as a part of its one-stop series of events held in Volusia and Flagler.
The tournament was set up in round-robin style, where the kids played as many games within the allotted time, and the kids with the most wins were given first- and second-place medals. The kids played on age-appropriate-sized courts and with matching age-appropriate tennis balls.
“The Futures are really designed for participation,” said Eric Dubin, the center’s tennis pro. “It gets the kids as much on-court match experience as possible in a relatively comfortable environment. And, it’s all about friendship and comradery. Tennis can be a little lonely; it’s not one of the team sports, so this gives the players a chance to see the same kids in a series of events.”
“It’s just a great introduction to learning how to be a competitor and how to compete and manage yourself on the court,” Dubin added. “Throughout the early years, even into college, there usually aren’t any referees, so kids have to learn to grow into good sportsmanship and develop all of those skills.”
