A Seabreeze win may have taken six games, but the Sandcrabs got to celebrate a 7-6 victory over Pine Ridge on homecoming night Friday, Oct. 2, at Municipal stadium.
“We have worked extremely hard as a team all season, and it felt great for it to finally pay off and get a win,” said senior offensive lineman Ryan Fulcher.
The win was also the first for head coach Skip Saunier, who was given the job after Marc Beach announced that he wouldn’t be returning after last season.
“It feels great, and I’m very happy for the kids, parents and alumni,” he said. “Knowing we won without our full squad is a reason for hope. The team has to keep grinding and getting better.
The only score for the Sandcrabs came on their first drive, after Brevin Glaze converted a fourth down with a 30-yard pass to Breonn Stauffer-McCormick that put them on the one-yard line. Anthony Butler, who played running back, ran it in from there. After the Panthers scored in the third quarter, they failed to convert their two-point attempt.
“Winning our homecoming game, I think it really made him proud, and I think we gave him hope,” said James McCloskey, who appeared to have forced a fumble on Pine Ridge’s last drive, but it was ruled an incomplete pass. “We are all coming together, not only as a team, but as a family, and we’re all so young, so coming together early in our high school years will bring him great seasons in the future. The coaches never stop pushing us to be the best we can be, so we just gave back to them by fighting until the last minute of our game, and we came out with the “W.”
The Sandcrabs have a bye this week, and they will play New Smyrna Beach the following Thursday, Oct. 15, in New Smyrna.
