Ormond Beach resident Tony Corn has been reenacting historical figures since the 1990s.

On average, Tony Corn can spend nearly $400 on a outfit— but he isn’t shopping at Gucci or Armani. Corn get his signature look from sutlers, formally known as people who sold provisions to soldiers, they are now the home to a variety of clothes and props for the historical reenacting community.

“Over the years I’ve spent about $1,500 to $2,000 on clothes,” he said. “You can pretty much all the pieces you need from there and the rest from people you know.”

A Civil War re-enactor for over two decades, Corn said that though most people buy and bring both confederate and union uniforms to events, he sticks to one side for personal reasons.

“My great-great-grandfather died in a union prisoner ward camp,” he said. “He was a Creek Indian and joined the confederacy out of Georgia. He was captured in Nashville in December of 1864, and he died in April of 1865, after the war was over. That’s why I stay confederate.”

Though his grandfather was buried in Georgia, Corn was present at the Ormond Beach Historical Society’s annual Pilgrims Rest Cemetery Tours this past weekend. His mother, sisters and other family members are buried there, just as he plans to be.

“I’ll be here one day.”
