‘Pets give us unconditional love and forgiveness.’

About a dozen dogs and one cat are likely feeling blessed, after the ceremony Oct. 4 at Grace Lutheran Church, 338 Ocean Shore Blvd.
Pet blessings are usually conducted in early October in remembrance of the love for all creatures expressed by St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day is Oct. 4.
“Pets give us unconditional love and forgiveness,” said Pastor Dennis Koch. “It speaks to the grace of God.”
Donna Rattell, of Ormond Beach, brought Molly, a blue nose pit bull, a rescue. “I’m blessed to have her; I might as well get her blessed.”
She also had two smaller dogs, Luke and James, who have been rambunctious and done serious damage to her sofa.
“They need a blessing,” she said.
Marty McCormick brought Buzz, a wheaten terrier, all the way from Ponce Inlet. She said he’s just turned 14 and has started to have issues.
“I hope this gives him some comfort,” she said.
Carol and Bob Mahaffey, of Ormond Beach, were there with their Siberian huskie, Sassie, who was very vocal and interested in checking everything out.
“I hope this calms him down,” Carol Mahaffey said.
Carolyn Brackett, of Ormond Beach, brought Caroline, a sky terrier, that she had adopted after she was rescued from a puppy mill.
“I think this is just wonderful,” she said.
