The Ormond Strong group, who walk across the Granada Bridge each morning with flags flying to honor local soldiers deployed to Afghanistan, always get a lot of attention and support.  There’s a lot of horn blowing, “thumbs up” signs and big smiles from people driving and walking by.

They should get a lot more attention at a special event planned for 6 p.m. on Oct. 24.

In the Dual County, Simultaneous, Quadruple Bridge Walk, participants will walk across one of four bridges, Flagler Beach, Granada, Seabreeze or Port Orange. The goal, according to organizer Debbie Kruck, is to get at least 200 walkers on each bridge to raise awareness and support for the 800 local National Guard troops deployed last spring, 200 days ago.

The walks will honor all veterans, especially Vietnam veterans, who “know what it feels like to be forgotten,” Kruck said.

Ormond Strong walks the Granada Bridge each morning at 7:30 and plans to continue until the soldiers return from Afghanistan. The original plan was that the soldiers would return in a year, but recent U.S. decisions to delay the withdrawal of forces from the country mean that the unit’s tour will be extended by “a month or so,” according to Kruck.
