Coaches often say that, in order to win the football game, the team has to win in all three aspects of the game: offense, defense and special teams. Having Jachai Polite on said team makes will greatly increase the chance of winning.
On offense, Polite lines up on the corner of the offensive line as the tight end. There, he either blocks or run routes as a receiver. Standing at 6 feet 3 inches, and weighing 250 pounds, defensive backs can’t match him in size, and line backers can’t match his speed. Polite has become a sure bet to grab an extra two points after Mainland scores a touchdown.
On defense, he also lines up on the corner of the line, as a defensive end. While he may not match the size of an offensive lineman, his quickness makes up for it, and he often gives quarterbacks a hard time, from the beginning to the end of the game. Polite already has a number of sacks, balls knocked down and forced fumbles.
His surprise position is punter. Punters are usually the smallest guys on the team and the worst tacklers. Polite is a fierce defender, who’s actually looking to put a big hit on punt returners. Some of Polite’s punts have changed the course of Mainland’s games. A few weeks ago, when the Mainland/Flagler Palm Coast score was 0-0 late in the second quarter, Polite’s punt was downed at the one-yard line. On Flagler’s next play, Polite sacked the quarterback in the end zone, which turned the game around. In his last game against Matanzas, he nailed two punts that went at least 40 yards in the air.
It’s no wonder why nearly every major college around the country has made him an offer, but a reasonable question should be: How do they plan to use him? He may just be better than all of the guys at the school where he chooses to play.
