Father Lopez wins districts!
The Father Lopez boys track team won its District 9-1A championship for the first time in over 30 years on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
The Green Wave had six runners finish in the Top 15. Nick Theriault led Lope by finishing second in 17 minutes, 54 seconds; and Matthew Roof (17:57) and Tanner Rosolino (18:08) finished behind him; Chase Massi, seventh 18:58; Noah Willis, ninth 18:59 and Nick Ohlwein 14th 19:43.
The Lady Green Wave took runner-up, with three of its runners place in the Top 15. Bryanna Pado took second (21:20), and Annie Morejon finished ninth (22:28). Adrienne Yaryan placed 13th (23:49).
Up next for both teams is the regional meet, which will be held at 8:30 Friday, Oct. 30, at Holloway Park in Lakeland.
Mainland ready for rival Seabreeze
The Buccaneers (8-1, 4-0) went into halftime down for the first in a long time against an area opponent, but they quickly rebounded and blew out New Smyrna 35-7 Friday, Oct. 23, at Municipal Stadium.
The Barracudas led 7-6 at halftime but gave up 28 unanswered points in the last two quarters to the area’s most explosive offense.
Now, the Bucs have their sights set on crosstown rival, Seabreeze, who lost a 21-17 controversial game against Deltona on the same night.
On paper, this matchup looks to be a clear Mainland win, but the Sandcrabs (1-8, 1-3) have been known to match their crosstown foes with much more intensity than other opponents. Seabreeze is still the last team to beat Mainland at Municipal Stadium in the regular season (7-3 in 2010).
Mainland and Seabreeze will play at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at Municipal Stadium.
Summer golf league winners
Riverbend Golf Club concluded its 15th-annual Ormond Beach Wednesday Night Men’s Summer Golf League, which lasted for 20 weeks, on Oct. 14.
Buzzy Porter and Deron McCabe took first place, and Doug Wall and Bill Back finished second. Wayne Elliot and Dan Faretta were the first-place point leaders, and Tim Anderson and Ryan Kaye were first-place consolation winners. Bill Ogle and Josh Hearn took second place.
Dunlap out, Father Lopez still cruises
Things might have been difficult in the locker room, but the Green Wave showed no signs of trouble in its 35-14 routing of Cocoa Beach Friday, Oct. 23, in Daytona.
Former head coach Jason Dunlap was not present during the game, and it has come out that he will not be returning to coach. John Cheney stepped in for him and led Father Lopez to the win and a .500 record (4-4), although the team has yet to win a division game.
Lopez will play division opponents First Academy at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at Alumni Stadium.
