Captain Matt Doughney, Flagler Beach Police Department, Laura Williams, Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, and Cindy Dalecki, Marketing 2 Go, completed a FEMA-certified course entitled “Social Media for Natural Disaster Response and Recovery’’ this past week.
“The course focused on the use of social media in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery,” Flagler County Sheriff James L. Manfre said. “Social media has shown to help people communicate and collaborate about events as the events unfold and we wanted to be sure our people are properly trained in case of an emergency.”
There were approximately 25 attendees from Volusia and Flagler counties representing various government agencies, emergency management personnel, fire service professionals, law enforcement, and public and private works. There were also attendees from NASA, Bert Fish Hospital, Daytona Beach International Airport and the Volusia County Department of Health.
The free course focused on utilizing social media to provide rapid and immediate real-time information about events such as a hurricane, tornado, large brush fire, and more. It taught how to integrate social media into a current communication plan, focusing on disaster management.
Course modules included: Introduction to Social Media, Understanding the Use of Social Media and Disaster Management, Implementing Different Social Media Platforms for Disaster Management, Facebook Hands-On, Twitter Hands-On, Crowdsourcing and Data Mining. Use of social media is vital for public safety agencies such as ourselves. This information is extremely valuable for us to bring back to our respective agencies.
On Thursday, Oct. 22, the Central and North Florida Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association presented the Palm Coast Duplicate Bridge Club an award for outstanding fundraising in support of the “Longest Day,” a day-long bridge marathon on Sunday, June 21. Since 2013, the American Contract Bridge League has partnered with the Alzheimer’s Association to raise funds for research and awareness.
“Without the outstanding support and donations of the club members, and their friends and family, and many local area companies, we would not have been able to raise some $10,500 for the Association,” chairperson, Russ Leavitt said.
The club meets at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 303 Palm Coast Parkway, Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 225-5584.
