The world’s longest running musical, "The Fantasticks," will be performed Sept. 18 to Oct. 4, right in Palm Coast’s backyard at the Flagler Playhouse in Bunnell.
"The Fantasticks" was created by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt and has been performed for over 50 years in Manhattan as well as all over the world. This romanticized drama is about a young boy and girl with a wall between them, built by their fathers. Comic relief comes from the abductors hired by the families. A twist in the plot reveals the parents secretly do everything in their power to bring the two together. It is the parents' theory that the children will do exactly opposite of what they are told. With this in mind they devise an elaborate plan to have the two fall in love.
Thirteen-year-old lead actress Abigail Andrade plays Luisa, with Marcus Roberts as Matt.
“It is really neat that we have a 13-year-old as well as a 60-year-old actor on cast,” Musical Director Judi Ernst said. "They all help each other through the rough spots. We can all see a great development."
The cast of eight actors as well as numerous volunteers put in many hours at the Flagler Playhouse. The cast meets for three hours a day and four to five times a week to rehearse the musical. Volunteer costume mistress Nancy Howell sews many of the cast's clothing out of donated fabrics from Window Expressions in Bunnell.
“I am anxious to perform in front of an audience; the response from an audience is very rewarding for the hard work we have all put into the musical,” Rich Lacy said. Lacy has performed in eight different productions, seven of them at the Flagler Playhouse.
