The Flagler Playhouse held a special performance presented by Reader’s Theater and directed by Pauline Rodick on Friday, Sept. 11. The performance was to pay tribute to all the First Responders in Palm Coast who gave their assistance at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Two excerpts were performed to show different perspectives on the tragedy of 9/11.
“The Moth” was performed by Everett Clark as New York City Police Lieutenant Steven Osbourne. Through the skit Osbourne describes his feelings of indifference when faced with tragedy in order to professionally and sufficiently get his job done. It was only on the second day of the disaster that he started feeling emotions. He recalls receiving a free happy meal in the midst of all the chaos. Inside he found a small note from a young child. In unpracticed script was written “You are my hero, thank you. -Alex” Moments after receiving the note tears started to flow and his emotions returned. Through all the horrible things he had witnessed all it took was a kind gesture from a child to feel like a human being again.
The second skit “The Guys”, written by Anne Nelson, was performed by Pauline Rodick as a writer and Hawley Rogers as a New York City Fire Chief. The Fire Chief went to the writer, Joan, for assistance with writing eulogies for eight of his men who perished during the falling of the twin towers. Joan assists by giving her insight, “These are ordinary people in an extraordinary situation.”
