Throughout the building process in 2000, Bill Rogers spent nearly every minute of every hour on site at his luxurious three-story oceanfront home in Hammock Beach at 21 Ocean Ridge Blvd. S.
For the past three years, he has rented and leased the home out, supposing he and his family might move back, but, after finding a “great” school for his kids and church in his hometown, Charleston, South Carolina, he has decided to sell it, since it is unlikely he will be returning to stay. Rather than putting the house on the market, Rogers has decided to put his house through a round robin bid process.
“The round robin process helps the seller out because it gives a timeframe for when the house is going to be put up,” said Daniel Cothran, Rogers’ real estate agent. “Instead of waiting for someone to come along, it gives a date that’s set in stone, so you draw people in and allow them to make bids.”
The home was opened for viewers today, and it will also be opened again at noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13. Anyone can place a bid, and Rogers will began placing calls to each bidder, from the greatest to the least, and he will ask if one wants to raise or dropout until he finds the highest bidder. At any time, though, both the bidders and the seller can walk away. There are no bindings during the bidding process.
When he lived here, Rogers enjoyed everything about the home.
“I loved filling up the spa with his suds with my wife and our two children, walking up and down the beach and seeing the whales,” he said, “We also loved to catch minnows, enjoyed playing golf and we enjoyed the clubs and meeting different people.”
On the inside, he enjoyed his game room, where he would have friends and family over to watch football games.
He experienced the NFL on a personal level at his beach home, when Super Bowl-winning quarterback Drew Brees rented out the home for a vacation.
Saying goodbye to his creation gives Rogers bittersweet feelings, but moving home also allows another family to enjoy what he was able to appreciate for over a decade.
When asked what the highest bidder will be getting in the home, he said, “They’ll get a home that’s built to last. It has dozens of things that you wouldn’t find in a normal home, and most of them you can’t see.”
