The Salvo Art Project located on 313 Old Brick Road has welcomed a new artist into the studio. Kathleen Lusby, of Ormond Beach, specializes as a portrait artist. She moved into the studio three weeks ago and has since been flourishing with the creative energy that runs through the Salvo Art Project. “All the artists here give each other inspiration,” Lusby said. “I feel privileged to have a studio at Salvo Art and to be working alongside JJ Graham and Petra Iston.”
“The need to create art and paint is in my blood,” Lusby said. She recalled an incident, at the age of 9, when her mother uncovered a nude portrait of a man and woman she had drawn. Although her mother chastised Lusby for drawing graphic and inappropriate subject matter, the scolding did not sway her interest in the human figure.

Portrait Artist Kathleen Lusby
Lusby’s focus has been on portraits for the last 15 years. Her inspiration comes from the challenge to create an image that closely resembles another human being as well as captures their personality. She explains the amount of time spent on a painting depends on the subject matter. If she does not find inspiration with the subject, the painting goes to the ‘dungeon’ and she moves on with a fresh start.
Lusby branches out beyond portrait work and paints landscapes as well as still life scenes. She keeps her subject matter broad in order to produce a diverse range of artwork. She realizes not everyone likes a tight and photographic style of painting used to create a portrait. She paints loose landscapes and other nature scenes in a more abstract style to appeal to a diverse clientele. You can visit her site at kathleenlusby.com.
