The Father Lopez cross country boys, ranked first in the 1A state division, finished another meet amid the top competition, placing second, a fourth consecutive Top 10 finish, at the University of Florida Mountain Dew Invitational Saturday, Sept. 19.
Nick Theriault led the Green Wave with a 17th-place finish, and Matthew Roof followed in 20th; Noah van der Burgt, 21st; Tanner Rosolino, 27th; Chase Massi, 45th.
This was the best finish for the boys in an invitational meet, which had 41 schools compete.
“Since I took over as the boy's head coach four years ago, it has truly been a Cinderella story for us,” Coach Sue O’Malley said. “From going to regions, finishing 22nd two years ago, to 10th last year and now possible podium position is unbelievable. Most of these young men have been so motivated since their freshman year. They have believed in themselves and me. They are focused and determined now more than ever. They give a lot of their talent and gifts to our Lord, knowing that He is their ultimate coach not me.”
In the girls’ race, the Lady Green Wave placed eighth out of 41 teams. Bryanna Pado placed 10th with a personal record time, and Annie Morejon took 41st.
The Green Wave will next run in the Bales & Trails Invitational Saturday, Sept. 26, at Bartram Trail High School.
Lady Bucs, record breakers
It was a great evening for the Mainland Lady Buccaneers, who swept Deltona, for the second time this season, 25-10, 25-15 and 25-17 Thursday, Sept. 17, at Mainland.
Tori Huffman, who had 27 assists, broke the school’s career assists record (read more about her in the column), and Kate Litke had eight aces, 26 points on her serve and 19 digs, which helped her break the school’s digs record. As the libero, Litke now has 589 digs and counting.
“Well, with such a great team this year, it has been a lot easier to get more digs because I know I can count on them to help me out and back me up,” she said. “I'm really happy, and I feel much honored to have reached my goal.”
