In both “The Karate Kid” and its remake, the student sought a trainer, who could team him how to defend himself against potential bullies. According to Samantha Arthur, she didn’t want to wait to receive a phone call from a school or hospital, claiming her daughter, Terri was beaten up; she signed her up for martial arts early.
While she was never bullied, Terri found herself on the losing end in a lot of martial arts tournaments in her early years. She started training at Remix Martial Studio under sensei Kevin Williams when she was 5 years old. From age 7 to 8, she entered and exited most tournaments quickly and disappointed.
According to her mother, after losing those matches, Terri would take mental notes of all the opponents she lost to, and, after getting back in training, she would show up to the tournaments, looking for the girls who made her cry.
"It became motivation for her until it became natural," Samantha Arthur said. "She would say, 'Am I going to keep letting these girls beat me, or am I going to step up my game?' And, that's what she did."
"Getting beat up was only good for me because it made me train harder," Terri Arthur said. "I'm much better now."
Arthur’s current status is national, state and Elite World Karate champion.
Her next tournament will be October 8-11, at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando. Her teammates, Mckelvey Dietz, Anthony Schettino and Jordan McKechnie (they are all national champs) will also be competing.
Remix Martial Arts Studio is located at 4984 Palm Coast Parkway, next to Sammy’s Pizza. For more information, call 295-3156.
"Those girls used to whoop on her, and she would cry, But she's trained so hard, so now it's no more, so it makes me proud to see that she's come a long way."
