Local businesses Become Alzheimer's Friendly

The Home Instead Senior Care office, serving Flagler and Putnam Counties, is launching a new campaign designed to make the community more Alzheimer’s friendly. Through the Alzheimer’s Friendly Business program, the Home Instead Senior Care office will provide free training to local businesses to help equip employees with information and resources needed to welcome families who are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease.

In a recent survey of Alzheimer’s caregivers, 74% reported that they and their loved ones have become more isolated from the community as a result of the disease. Furthermore, 85% reported that they feel a reduced quality of life due to isolation.

“For many caregivers, the unpredictable nature of the disease can make going out in public with their loved one intimidating,” said Mary Beth Johnson, president of the Home Instead Senior Careoffice. “Our research shows that family caregivers might be reluctant to frequent public places because of the behaviors that could be associated with the disease.”

According to Alzheimer’s Disease International, the number of people with dementia worldwide is expected to grow to a staggering 75.6 million by 2030 and 135.5 million in 2050.

To complete the training, employees are asked to work through an interactive, online module available at AlzheimersFriendlyBusiness.com. Once the training is successfully completed, businesses will receive a window cling with the Alzheimer’s Friendly Business designation. The designation will be valid for two years.

Golf Tournament raises nearly $35,000 to Benefit Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House

Over 100 golfers competed in the 13th-annual Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House Golf Classic on September 14, at the Hammock Dunes Links Course in Palm Coast.

The event raised nearly $35,000 to benefit the eight-bed Hospice House, located on the campus of Florida Hospital Flagler in Palm Coast.

“So many wanted to play in this year’s tournament that, and, for the first time in 13 years, we had to turn teams away and change the format of play to a scramble so that the tournament would move a bit faster,” said Bill Tol, Florida Hospital HospiceCare Foundation director. “A special thanks to everyone for such great support.”

With a score of 46.1, the winning team included Dave Franklin, Craig Straky, Rich Hottinger and Rich Hottinger Jr.

The Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House opened in 2007 and is the community’s most comprehensive hospice, offering acute, respite, home health and continuous care. No other hospice in Flagler County offers all four services.
