The following is a news release from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office:
Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a 16-year-old student Sept. 28 for possessing a weapon while on the campus of the Flagler Technical Institute.
At approximately 11:08 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a call from a mother of a student attending the FTI. She stated she had received information from her son concerning a gun that was hidden in the bathroom of FTI.
Deputies quickly arrived on scene and with the assistance of school officials conducted a thorough search of the area in question.
At the onset of the investigation, the school’s threat level was raised to orange. This means all outdoor activities were cancelled, no classes changed and students and staff remained in place. After a gun was not located, the status was relaxed to green, or normal school operation.
While deputies investigated, they learned that it was not a gun they were looking for, but a knife. Deputies and school staff disassembled the bathroom ceiling and ultimately cut into the wall and discovered some money, an empty pill bottle and a brass knuckle knife.
Based on the details of the investigation, deputies arrested a 16-year-old, 8th-grade Palm Coast boy without incident.
He was charged with one count of felony possession of a weapon on school property and was processed at the Flagler County jail.
He was later released to his parents. The student is an Indian Trails Middle School student who attends the FTI program.
It is unclear at this time whether a gun was brought to the FTI campus. A follow up investigation is underway. Deputies urge students to immediately report all suspicious activity to a school official, law enforcement officer or their parent or guardian.
