After a break from its inaugural season, the Palm Coast Sparrows, a men’s lacrosse team, returned to the field this past weekend and came up short against Embry-Riddle’s club team 8-7 on Sunday, Sept. 27, at Wadsworth Park in Flagler Beach.
David Lofgren scored three goals for the Sparrows, and Daniel Myer, Ryan Devens, Josh Gray and Josh Shelton each had a goal. Goalie Andrew Almansberger finished with 14 saves, and Carter Kusek had six saves.
“It was a tough one to swallow, but the first game is always to see where you’re really at,” said Brian Catroppa, the club’s president and coach. “So, we know where we’re at now. We’re good; we just have to finish the game.”
The Sparrows belong to the Florida Lacrosse League and the Post-Collegiate Lacrosse Club. They are broken up into two teams, the Flying Sparrows and the Haunted Sparrows, which are 35 years old and up. Both are mostly comprised of players who competed in their high school days and want to continue to play the sport they love.
“Lacrosse is every sport combined into one,” Catroppa said. “It has the football mentality, where it’s physical. It has the plays like basketball, the transition like soccer and sticks like hockey. So, that’s pretty much why I started and kept on playing.”
