On Monday, Nov. 2, something will occur at United Way Volusia-Flagler Counties that hasn’t occurred in 19 years – a new president will take the helm.

The United Way Board of Directors has announced that Dennis Burns, formerly of Heart of Florida United Way, will be the next CEO and president of United Way Volusia-Flagler.

“We are all very excited to have the experience, knowledge and dedication that Dennis brings with him after serving with the United Way for 19 years,” Board Chairman John Walsh said.

Burns has 19 years of direct fundraising experience in the corporate workplace giving arena, as well as having managed an account portfolio of more than $6.5 million. He also brings with him a strong understanding of the current landscape and dynamics of philanthropy in the corporate world.

Currently living in Orlando, Burns and his wife will be moving to Ormond-by-the Sea full time.

“We have a condo in Ormond-by-the-Sea that we bought eight years ago,” Burns said. “We had our eye on it for when we retire. As it is we are there three out of four weekends a month, we really like it there.”

Current President Ray Salazar’s official last day is Dec. 31.

“I will have a transition period with him to see how much assistance he will need to get up and running, introduce him to some of the key players, and acquaint him with our system here,” Salazar said. “As soon as he feels ready, I will leave.”

Salazar said he has no future plans at the moment with the exception of “getting up without an alarm clock.”
