Keeping it real: “I’m not going to lie. After losing the first couple of games, I thought, ‘Oh Man! I hope this doesn’t end up like last year.’”
BAILEE HURD, team captain
Sitting at 1-3 early on in the season, it appeared the Matanzas Lady Pirates’ 2016 lacrosse season was quickly heading down the drain, similar to the previous year. Since then, the girls have yet to lose, currently riding a 10-game win streak,
“But we decided that instead of hoping we win we were going to work our butts off for one another,” said team captain Bailee Hurd. “And, I credit Coach (LeAnn Johnston) so much. She really got tough on us this year. She knew we wanted to win; we just needed her push and coaching skills. We had a lot of new plays this year that have been really successful so far.”
Johnston has completely flipped the Lady Pirates’ won-loss record in just one season, taking Matanzas from a 2-11 to 11-3 team record. They haven’t loss since Feb. 18.
“I’m so happy with everything we’ve accomplished so far, and I hope to keep going and win at districts,” Hurd concluded.
Matanzas will pit its win streak and season on the line next week, when the district tournament will begin Tuesday, April 5, in St. Augustine.
