Champions, on to states
Ormond Beach native Noah Dunn and fellow senior DeVonte Woods stood atop their weightlifting podiums as regional champions of their weight divisions for Father Lopez Thursday, March 31, Pedro Menendez High School. The two also won their district champions to help Lopez win as a team.
For Seabreeze, Cameron Mitchener placed third in his region to also advance to the state tournament, which will be held Saturday and Friday, April 14 and 15, at the Kissimmee Civic Center.
Going, going, gone!
Ormond Beach native Kinsley Moore helped the Seabreeze the Lady Sandcrabs beat New Smyrna 3-1 Moore recorded her first career over-the-fence home run, scoring two of Seabreeze’s three runs.
“I expected to hit it because I have been so close for so long,” Moore said. “I knew it was coming; I was due.”
When asked if her future at-bat approach would change, she said, “I will have the same approach every time. I will hit the ball, and I will get on base.” The Sandcrabs’ will next play DeLand at 6:30 tonight at Seabreeze.
Killian throws a strikeout fest
To conclude the regular softball season, Mainland’s Abagaile Killian tossed 15 strikeouts to shut out Father Lopez 1-0 Monday, April 4, at Father Lopez.
The Lady Bucs got their game-winning run in the sixth inning, when Josie Glass was walked with bases loaded, with two outs. Mainland’s Sierra Sims and Caitlin Robison both led all hitters with two hits.
Killian finished the regular season, throwing retiring 189 batters in 18 games, and she hopes to add more in the district tournament, which will begin Monday, April 11, at Deltona. For the Lady Green Wave, they have two more regular season games, and their district tournament will also begin Monday, at Trinity Catholic.
The Tomoka Mile
Last month, Tomoka Elementary School held its 10th-annual Tomoka Mile races. In girls’ competition, Camryn Chiumento became the first third grader to ever win the race, with a 7:09 time, and, in the boys’ race, fifth grader Crawford Olsen set a new school record, crossing the finishing line at 6:07.
Sophia Tan placed second, and Shea Bryan took third for the girls, and Treyon Newton placed second, and Zane Barron, third, for the boys.
‘We’re rowing up’ fast
Halifax Rowing recently took its talents compete in the Tampa Mayor Cup on March 20, in Tampa.
The men’s varsity 4+ team, Sam Bayer, Peter Springer, Bret Bay, Ben Herstein and Vince Leffler (coxswain), placed fourth; women’s youth varsity 4+ Paige Jagger, Ashley Dodd, Julia Maxwell, Amanda Odgen and Jasleen Kahlon (C ) second, mixed middle school 4x AJ Leffler, Dylan Dominguez, Emma Dominguez, Nick Schwartz second; Mixed youth 4+ A-boat: Ashley Dodd, Paige Jagger, Bret Bay, Sam Bayer Jasleen Kahlon (C) first; B-boat: Ben Herstein, Peter Springer, Amanda Ogden, Julia Maxwell Vince Leffler (C) second.
