Ormond Beach Sandcrabs win scholarships
The Shores Resort and Spa recently hosted the East Coast Conference Pop Warner Academic Scholars Awards Banquet, recognizing both football players and cheerleaders for their talents on and off the field.
The Ormond Beach Sandcrabs organization had four athletes in their last year of the program receive scholarships. Bailey McQuarrie represented the Sandcrab teams well by being awarded the feature scholarship, the Rick Barnett Memorial Scholarship as the ECC top scholar in the cheer division. These awards are granted based on grades, community involvement and volunteerism as well as on-the-field performance.
“On the field wins are fun, but winning scholarships and recognition for contributions in the classroom is pretty fantastic too,” said secretary Jennifer Schwartz. “We are so honored to represent Ormond Beach with effective demonstrations of sportsmanship off the field and positive academic accolades.”
Spikes win Beach Bash title
The Ormond Beach Spikes 12U travel team competed in and won the USSSA Bash at the Beach Tournament Sunday, April 10, in Ormond. The Spikes went 4-0 throughout the weekend.
In the semifinal game, Noah Pepe nailed a two-run homer to put give them the lead, and stellar pitching in each game assisted in the four wins.
Lady Bucs flag football, Top 5
After shutting out crosstown rival Seabreeze 18-0 on April 5, Mainland went on to blank Flagler Palm Coast 18-0 and Atlantic (Port Orange) 27-0 within a week’s time, which has helped them to move up five spots to No. 4 in the Class 1A rankings.
The Bucs’ Top 5 rank is the highest they’ve ever gone, and it’s for good reason. On the season, they have shut out seven of the nine opponents to date, so far only allowing 13 points.
Mainland softball advances
The Mainland Lady Bucs advanced to the district semifinal with a 2-1 win over Matanzas on Monday, April 12.
Abagaile Killian struck out 11 batters to notch her 11th win on the season, and she hit a triple on offense. Mainland fell behind 1-0 in the second inning, tied the game in the fourth inning with a stolen base by Dani Keister, and scored the winning run in the sixth on a bunt single by Sierra Sims. The Bucs will play Deltona for a chance to advance to Friday’s district title game.
