Shaya Fogel's cafe hasn't opened yet, but he's already claiming to be the best cup of coffee in the city.
"I'm a passionate coffee drinker," he said, "and it's hard to get a great cup of coffee in Ormond Beach. I think Dunkin Donuts does an okay job with that, and even Starbucks, they're okay I think, but that's an expensive cup of coffee."
So how much does Fogel think a great cup of coffee should cost? While there are no promises yet, he's thinking somewhere around $1.50 for the basics.
Though Eden Fresh Cafe isn't set to open until May, Event Organizer Tamara Huth already hosted their first event April 10. Colors at the Cafe was the first the cafe's many art shows, as the staff hopes to develop a strong tie with the local art community. More than 60 people came to see art by Chaya Sorah Lindsay, photography by Katherine Orfinger and music by violinist Zoriy Zinger.
"When I look at Chaya Sorah Lindsay's art, it doesn't go with chicken wings and hot dogs," he said. "but I think it goes well with what we have."
Natasha Levy, the cafe's chef, is known around town for her famous salads. Executive Director for the Jewish Federation in Volusia and Flagler Gloria max attended the event, and said the cafe will do terrific as long as Levy is behind the food.
"We'll have some good treats too," Fogel laughed. "You got to lure them in with something."
While all the items available at Shaya Fogel's new cafe are made kosher to honor the Jewish traditions of he and his staff, he says the taste is anything but bland.
It's much more than just kosher," he said. "I mean, it has to be kosher or I can't be involved, but my goal is that it doesn't have to be known as only kosher. That's just how we prepare it. We want to be known for great taste, great time, great culture, great art and great people."
