Palm Coast Elks Lodge 2709 celebrated its 30th anniversary on April 16 at the Elks Lodge. The room was filled with retired police officers and firefighters, the mayor of Palm Coast and other Elks members.
The Elks Club consists of American citizens whose goals are to support charities locally, statewide and nationally. The Palm Coast Elks Club gives out $10,000 a year in scholarships, often for persons looking to go into law enforcement or firefighting careers. Fundraising also helps Flagler County children to attend the state youth camp. Other programs are the soccer shoot, hoop shoot and drug awareness programs, which are designed to help keep young people away from undesirable activities. The organization also provide lunch weekly to veterans and runs one of the best Boy Scout troops in the state, which produces more Eagle Scouts than any other troop their size.
After a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem and prayer, all veterans in attendance were acknowledged and recognized with a round of applause. As the awards ceremony started, Flagler County District 2 Commissioner Frank Meeker and Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts presented official proclamations from the county and city declaring April Palm Coast Elks Lodge 2709 Month, in honor of the lodge’s long-time community service supporting Flagler's children, veterans, first responders and active duty service personnel.
Two Honorary Life Memberships were given out to Brian McNulty and Andy Jekabsons. These are earned by going above and beyond what the officers and volunteers do for the lodge well as actions and financial contributions. McNulty and Jekabsons are the fourth and fifth persons in the history of the lodge to receive this honor, said President Vincent Gough Jr. These are just a few of those who were acknowledged at the 30th anniversary.
