The Lady Pirates had to wait until the final race to see if they would be crowned District 6-3A champions on April 13, at FPC. They edged Mainland by six points to capture their first title since 2010.

“This win is not about me; it's about the kids and my great coaching staff that I have surrounded myself with,” coach Danny Weed said. “This win does mean a lot to me, because it's my first district title as a head coach, and I'm so blessed to have many talented kids, supportive parents and administration.”

Breanne Fuller led the way for the girls, winning both the 100- and 200-meter dash. The boys finished third with a few first-place individual performances.

“This win does mean a lot to me because it's my first district title as a head coach and I'm so blessed to have many talented kids, supportive parents and administration.”

Going forward, Matanzas hopes to push its region qualifiers to the state final meet with Top 4 finishes in each competition. The Pirates will compete in the Region 2-3A Meet at 9 a.m. Friday, April 29, at First Academy in Orlando.
