The followings a news release from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office:

A Palatka man was arrested April 25 after the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office alerted Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies that a stolen car was heading into Flagler County at about 12:52 p.m.

Deputies spotted the newer-model white Kia four-door, occupied by three people, at the intersection of U.S. 1 and West State Road 100. When deputies tried to stop the car, the driver refused to stop. Deputies did not initiate a pursuit.

The Kia headed north on U.S. 1 and crashed after the driver lost control while turning right onto Royal Palms Parkway. Two of the three suspects were detained for questioning. However, a third suspect fled into nearby woods.

Deputies searched the area around the crash site. K-9 deputies and the Flagler County Fireflight helicopter helped with the search.

As a precaution, Rymfire Elementary was placed on code orange because of the search. This meant students and staff remained inside their classrooms and participated in no outdoor activities.

The first two suspects were not charged. The third suspect, the driver, was apprehended after he walked out from behind 62 Reidsville Drive in Palm Coast.

Zacchaeus Nelson, 22, was charged with grand theft auto, resisting arrest without violence, and possession of cannabis under 20 grams. Deputies took him to the Flagler County jail.
