The new No. 1: Seabreeze upsets crosstown rival for district title and playoff spot

Perfect no more. The Seabreeze Sandcrabs avenged its only loss of the season by handing the Mainland Bucs(13-1) its only loss when it mattered most to repeat as district champions and advance to the postseason, beating their crosstown rival 19-13 on Tuesday, April 26, at Warner Christian Academy.

“I just told the girls after the early loss, ‘We will get another shot at them, so let’s make the best of it,’ and they did,” coach Blake Hillman said. “I’m proud of the girls. The defense played great. Mainland can score points, and they’re very athletic. So, after losing the way we did, our confidence is going up, and I couldn’t be more proud of our girls.”

The Lady Sandcrabs (11-1) have won the district title three of the last four years under the leadership of two-time Bright House Top Athlete quarterback McKenzie Bowlus, who connected with

“This means everything to me,” McKenzie Bowlus said. “This is my senior year, and we just won districts. Now, I want to win states. I’ve brought my team this far, and they’re going to take me far.”

The Sandcrabs have to wait and see if they will be hosting or traveling for their opening playoff game, which will be held Friday, May 6.
