Rachel Gammon was rarely seen without a smile. She was one of those people who seemed to get along with everyone, every cat, and every dog. They seemed to know they could trust her.
Sitting at her desk in the lobby of the Halifax Humane Society, the cat adoption counselor would squeal when owners would bring their adopted dogs in for a visit. She loved to see the transformation, from the often scared and abused animals, to the happy family pets.
It wasn’t uncommon for Rachel to stop by the shelter on her day off. She just couldn’t stay away.
I had the privilege of working with Rachel while I was the Volunteer Manager at the shelter. She was always willing to help, spending her own time volunteering at events – anything for the animals.
The humane society was a family tradition, both of her parents have worked at the shelter, and her love of animals made it a natural for her to follow in their footsteps.
Rachel died of natural causes in July – she was 24 years old.
Friends, family, and co-workers, will come together for a Celebration of Life for Rachel at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 28, after the shelter, at 2364 LPGA, has officially closed for the day. The location of her service is appropriate. It was definitely a place she loved.
Those attending are asked to R.S.V.P. on her Facebook page, now being monitored by her mother, Adrianne.
When I left the humane society Rachel gave me a picture for my office wall. It says:
“Start doing things you love; If you don’t like something, change it; Life is about the people you meet and the things you create with them.”
I loved it when she gave it to me, and hardly a day goes by that I don’t think of her when I look at it. It’s so -- Rachel. I will continue to look at it, be motivated by it, and I will always remember the smiling girl who gave it to me.
