Ryan Lochte and Rowdy Gaines will be coming to the Ormond Beach YMCA after all. A Rematch after Rio Charity Swim event had been announced earlier, but it was put on hold for a short time after the troubles of the Olympic swim team, which included Lochte.
Now, the board of directors for the Volusia Flagler Family YMCA and Stewart-Marchman-Act Foundation have agreed to proceed with the fundraising event.
The ticket price of $100 includes soft drinks and heavy appetizers. Tickets are available at the Ormond Beach Family YMCA, Port Orange Family YMCA and at the SMA Foundation office in Daytona Beach.
The Ormond Beach Family YMCA Aquatics Center will host the event at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28.
Also featured at the event will be Charles Lydecker, former Brown and Brown executive and YMCA board member, who has several swimming accomplishments himself. He is fully supportive of having the event.
“Ryan is a local celebrity athlete who has done much good for his sport and community for over 14 years and he made a mistake. I stand by him and am ready to move forward with this fun event for two worthy causes,” Lydecker said in a press release.
The event will raise money for Ormond Beach YMCA’s capital campaign and SMA’s Huger Adolescent Campus at Tiger Bay.
The swim event will include relays in the under-10 group, high school swimmers from Daytona Beach Speed and masters swimmers from the YMCA, all swimming against Lochte. The swim event will culminate with a race between Lydecker and Lochte.
Color commentary of all of the races will be delivered by three-time gold medalist and NBC commentator Rowdy Gaines.
Lydecker holds three U.S. masters swimming world records and was inducted into the Smith Point National Lifeguard Champions Hall of Fame, according to the press release.
Lochte grew up swimming at the Port Orange Family YMCA. He attended Spruce Creek High School and has become an 11-time Olympic medalist.
Rowdy Gaines is a three-time Olympic medalist and an Olympic commentator.
