The Matanzas Pirates were 10 points away from defeat but turned the game around to beat crosstown rival the Flagler Palm Coast Lady Bulldogs 25-18, 20-25, 19-25, 25-19, 15-11 on Thursday, Aug. 25, at FPC.
After winning the second and third set, FPC led the Pirates 15-13 in the fourth set, but Matanzas rallied to take the lead and eventually win the set.
Head coaches Dawn Moses (Matanzas) and Ashlee Dietrich (FPC) got their first crosstown rivalry experience, as both teams’ fans cheered, passionately stomped the bleachers and chanted throughout the night for each point scored.
“The fact that we were able to come back in the fourth set and win the fifth was critical, because we put a lot of young kids on the floor,” Moses said. “So, I was very happy. I thought we played well on defense, and I love to see them play scrappy and go for the ball.”
For junior Jaelyn Lawrence, it wasn’t her first experience in the rivalry, but it was her first time playing as FPC’s opponent.
“It was kind of weird being back in my old gym,” the new Lady Pirate said, “but it felt nice seeing my old teammates, and it felt even better beating them,” she laughed.
Say what? “It was kind of weird being back in my old gym, but it felt nice seeing my old teammates, and it felt even better beating them.”

DID YOU KNOW? The Lady Bulldogs have not beaten the Pirates since 2013.
