Marti heavily trims down PR
Both Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas began their cross country seasons at FPC’s fifth-annual Spikes and Spurs Classic on Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Flagler County Fairgrounds.
In boys competition, FPC’s Shawn Gordon (26th) and Micah Slicer (38th) were the only locals to finish in the Top 50. In girls competition, Pirates’ Isabella Rodriguez (42nd), Rain Marti (33rd) and Kylie Dedeo (28th) finished in the Top 50.
Marti ran a personal best 26:53 last year at the Florida State University Pre-state Meet on Oct.2, and she trimmed that time down to 21:24 at this event.
Matanzas swims to first places against Ridgeview
The Pirates swim team kicked off its season with a win over Ridgeview Thursday, Aug. 25, at Frieda Zamba Pool.
First place swims included Courtney Ryan in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:24.88). Chiara Longo won both the 100 (1:02.69) and 200 freestyle (2:17). Marie Benincasa took first in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 32.12, and Vanessa Sanabria was first in the 100 fly (1:17.03). The girls took first in all three relays--200 medley (Ryan, Longo, Benincasa and Isabella Herrera) with a time of 2:15.00, the 200 Freestyle relay (Anne Shoemaker, Angelina Voronova, Cristina Cabada, Herrera) with a time of 2:16.75, and the 400 freestyle relay (Ryan, Benincasa, Sanabria, Longo) with a time of 4:32.88.
The boys took four firsts, which consisted of Ed Gonzalez, who won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:16.91. Brendan Zagumennikh took first in the 50 freestyle in 24.88 and the 500 freestyle (5:36.40). The boys relay also won the 200 freestyle (Gonzalez, Yury Pastukhov, Fabian Lopez, and Zagumennikh) with a time of 2:03.44.
Matanzas will next compete against Palatka at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at the Putnum Aquatic Center.
Masters swimmers take first place
The Palm Coast Masters’ Swim Team competed in a 1.25- and 2.5-mile ocean marathon on Saturday Aug. 20, at Jacksonville Beach to benefit the local lifeguard station.
Nine members competed and took home seven first places, and four swam the 2.5-mile distance with team coaches Glenn Partelow winning the 65-70 age group in the time of 63:10, 11th overall out of 96 swimmers.
Sheryl Watkins won the women’s race in the 50-55 age group in 66:28. Kate Sussman won the 55-60 age group in 71:11, and Sonia Millan won the 40-45 group in 66:21.
In the 1.25-mile race of 124 participants, Vincent Migilis of the 25-30 group, placed 10th overall in 31:49. Irena marks won the 40-45 division in 41:21, while Sherry Keyes won the 60-65 group in 45:25. The team swims in the warmer months at Frieda Zamba pool in Palm Coast and in cooler times at the Belle Terre Swim and Racquet club. They’ve competed in this event for the last six years.
