The new neonatal intensive care unit at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center received 32 handmade isolette covers Nov. 29 which were made by Quilters by the Sea. The material was purchased by the hospital from Byrd’s Nest Quilt Shop in Ormond Beach.
Also, the Aberdeen community in Ormond Beach donated handmade baby blankets; hats and booties; breastfeeding pillows; and eye covers.
The isolette covers will help limit babies’ overstimulation to lights and sounds while in intensive care.
“The newborns in our NICU are often premature, born before their neurological system has matured. A preemie’s eyes are very sensitive to light and overstimulation can cause stress and deter rest, as well as cause the heart rate to drop,” said Becky Vernon, director of women and children’s services at the hospital. “These isolette covers are a wonderful gift.”
Thomas & Betts, an international company, has moved its Amerace Airfield lighting business located in Scarborough, Ontario, into its manufacturing facility in Ormond Beach at 12 Southland Road. The move is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
As a result, the Ormond Beach facility is in the process of adding 41 new positions by Jan. 3, including assemblers, machine operators, team leaders and maintenance technicians. The plant will manufacture transformers and connectors to light runways, taxiways and other airport areas.
“The industry is rapidly changing and in order to remain competitive, the business made the decision to optimize our manufacturing footprint,” spokeswoman Melissa London said in an email. She said the Ormond Beach location was chosen because of available space, labor supply and the facility’s past performance in safety, quality, service and cost. A portion of the Ormond Beach facility manufacturing space has been transformed and will house manufacturing equipment relocated from Canada.
Thomas & Betts is a part of ABB, a worldwide company with 135,000 employees and national headquarters in Cary, North Carolina.
