Bulldogs basketball reverses slow start with winning streak
FPC began the season with two straight losses but have flipped their fortuned into four straight wins. After beating Seabreeze 53-44, the Bulldogs have squeezed by Spruce Creek, DeLand and Palatka each by two points (57-55, 44-42 and 59-57).
FPC took down the Hawks at the very end of the game, when Frank Clark stole the ball and scored the layup before time expired.
The Bulldogs have played selflessly, often having different players lead the team in scoring.
Head coach Gary McDaniel credits competitive practices and returning players from injury for the team’s turn around.
FPC next plays Trinity Christian (Deltona) at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 9, at FPC.
Pirates’ Greg Harrison makes clutch free throws in Matanzas win
With Matanzas trailing St. Augustine 64-66 with two seconds remaining in the game on Dec. 1, at Matanzas, Greg Harrison stepped up to the free throw line and knocked both shots down, forcing an overtime.
From there, the Pirates outscored the Yellow Jackets 15-8 in the extra period to win the game. Jamarie Robinson (10), Greg (11) and Christian Harrison (17), Logan Strover (13), Greg Layne (14) and Devin Mathews (14) finished in double figures. Harrison also added 12 rebounds, and Layne had 11.
Matanzas next plays First Coast Christian at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at Matanzas.
FPC wrestling takes third at Border Wars
The Bulldogs wrestled to a third-place finish out of 25 teams at the Border Wars Saturday, Dec. 3, in South Walton.
Avery Holder was the only bulldog to his win his division, and John Johnson, Michael DeAugustino, Michael Martins and Steve Canidate took runner-up. Trace Insalaco placed fourth.
DeAugustino lost his final match in extra time to Alabama 7A defending state champion Gabe Hixenbaugh.
FPC will next wrestle against Freedom High School Friday, Dec. 9, in Orlando.
Matanzas soccer suffers first loss of the season
After an 8-0-1 start, the Pirates fell to the Seabreeze Sandcrabs 2-0 Friday, Dec. 2, at Matanzas.
Despite the loss, Matanzas has dominated its opponents, when it comes to goal scoring. The Pirates have scored 41 goals while only allowing nine goals through 10 games. Nathan Hubbs leads the Pirates with 21 goals, and Daniel Ramirez leads all players with 10 assists.
The Pirates rebounded in a 7-1 blowout against Ridgeview and will look to continue their winning ways against Ponte Vedra at 7:20 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at Ponte Vedra.
FPC girls basketball off to 4-1 start
The Lady Bulldogs have only dropped one game, despite their youth. They rebounded from their only loss with a 55-50 win over Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate on Saturday, Dec. 3, at Spruce Creek.
Skye Green led all scorers with 20 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Dyman Howard followed with 17 points and seven rebounds.
The Bulldogs will next play two games Evans and Washington in a tournament this weekend at Lafayette High School.
