Mary Barrs will take her "Glory Road Boutique" to a Head Start center in Holly Hill on Dec. 20 to make Christmas merrier for about 75 parents of Head Start children, according to a press release.
Barrs, founder of the God's Little Angels charity, has set up her free gift boutique at many parties for children and senior citizens over the past 20 years. This time she wants to offer gifts and door prizes to Head Start parents, because "times are tough. They need a little boost this Christmas," Barrs said.
Several local businesses have stepped in with donations, but area residents are welcome to donate new gift items including clothing, towels, lotions and the like. "They just need to call me at 386-253-5349," she said.
Checks made out to God's Little Angels Inc. are always welcome, she said, and they may be sent to SunTrust Bank, 2300 S. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach Shores FL 32118, to the attention of Angel Macauley.
Halifax Health is hosting a holiday toy and clothing drive, seeking donations for children receiving care in its Child and Adolescent Behavioral Services unit through Dec. 16.

The City Commission has authorized a $49,887 contract with Zev Cohen and Associates Inc. to conduct a feasibility study on constructing a community center west of Interstate 95. City Commissioners have discuessed a need in this area because of population growth.
City Commissioner Rick Boehm pointed out at the City Commission meeting that the city has not built a community center in 35 years. There are currently two: Nova Community Center, and South Ormond Neighborhood Center.
The proposed new location would be property owned by Volusia County Schools west of Pathways Elementary School on Airport Road. The location would require School Board approval. Boehm said that the advantage to this location is that it already has a lift station and is fenced.
Two beach ramp changes have been announced by Volusia County Community Information. The Cardinal Drive beach ramp will reopen Friday, Dec. 9, and will be open seven days a week.
The Milsap Avenue beach ramp will resume its normal off-season schedule beginning Dec. 12 and will only be open on weekends.

The City Commission approved a new contract with Birdstown, the company that operates Nova Skate Park at Nova Community Park, on Dec.6 that increases the monthly subsidy.
Earlier this year, the company said they could no longer operate the park without additional financial support. There is no admission fee for the park. The original idea was that the company would make money from rentals, but participants often have their own equipment.
Birdstown will receive a minimum wage, $8.15 per hour, for up to 49 hours per week to pay staff, and $250 for a weekly management fee. The contract calls for the amount not to exceed $33,766 per year.
When the park was unsupervised, there were reports of swearing, fighting, vandalism and smoking. Commissioner Troy Kent said he appreciated what Birdstown does in keeping the environment wholesome, but would be reluctant to agree if more money is requested in the future.
