For the second consecutive year, and third straight contest, the Seabreeze varsity boys salvaged the day by not allowing Mainland to celebrate wins in all four games on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Seabreeze.
The Bucs won the JV girls game 25-24, the boys game 61-21 and the girls varsity game 47-41. Seabreeze boys varsity would end Mainland's run, downing the Bucs 68-61.
"Hats off to both Mainland and Seabreeze kids for focusing on playing a hard-fought, high-level competitive game from the initial jump ball," Mainland's coach Landis McCoy said.
McCoy and his players found themselves in frequent arguments with the officials throughout the first half of the game. One player was kicked out of the game, and a Mainland supporter was escorted out of the gym for criticizing the officials.
When asked about the controversy surrounding the refs, Seabreeze coach Pep Johnson said, "It went our way the first half, but it swung back their way in the second half. That's how they made a run, so it evened out. We just answered and made free throws at the end."
Mainland trailed by as many as 23 points but was able to pull the game within four points in the last two minutes.
The boys varsity teams will meet again at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, at Mainland, and girls varsity will meet at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at Mainland.
Scoring leaders: Mainland's Kendall King led all scorers with 17 points, and Dylan Locke had 15 points. Anthony Edds led Seabreeze with 14, and Daversa finished with 11.
In girls play, Lady Sandcrab Christen Helem had 14 points. For Mainland, Donna. Hawkins led all scorers with 15 points, and Leeann Kant has 11.
