Flagler Daytona State College teachers, staff, students, friends and family, joined together for a free Holiday Picnic recently at Herschel King Park.
The event was sponsored by the Academic Club, Gay Straight Alliance, Healthy Roots, Multicultural Club, Psychology Club and the Veterans Club.
“The best part of it all was seeing individuals, from all nationalities, religions and ethnicities, come together and share their unique backgrounds,” Multicultural Club President, Allistair Sammy said.
Connecting with other students at DSC can be problematic, since the typical way students meet at college are as dorms, parties or football games, none of which exist at the school. DSC students go to school, go to work and go home.
This collaborative effort gave students an opportunity to meet each other and create friendships.
“One of the main goals of the psychology club is to create opportunities for the students to connect and make friends, which helps them relieve stress, and make their time at DSC more enjoyable,” Vice President Irina Parpulanskaya said.
Students agreed that after the end of the semester, and a stressful week of finals, this was a great way for everyone to let loose and enjoy themselves.
“The bounce house was definitely my kids favorite thing to do,” President of the Veterans Club, Mick Hourahan said. “It was hard to get them out of there; that was until Santa showed up with a bag full of treats!”
During the scavenger hunt, organized by R.J. Sluman, President of Healthy Roots, participants were assigned a group so picnic goers could meet new people. Other activities included: wheelbarrow races, three legged races and a pie eating contest.
“I couldn’t stop laughing,” President of the Academic Club Kaylee Jackson said. “Seeing my sister’s face, submerged in a pie, was awesome!”
Planned events for the clubs include: the Veterans Club movie night at the Daytona State College Amphitheater; Healthy Roots’ chili cook off; and the Psychology Club dodgeball tournament at 3 p.m. Feb. 9 to benefit the Family Life Center. Interested teams can email [email protected].
