Johnson lifts off to states

Seabreeze weightlifter Reiana Johnson will make her way to the Kissimmee Civic Center this weekend for the FHSAA State Weightlifting meet, which will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 5, in Kissimmee.

With just a year of weightlifting experience, the junior already holds the school’s bench press (160), clean and jerk (150) and total weight records (310), breaking all of her last year records, that had previously stood since 1999.

Johnson won her district championship and placed third, due to a missed lift, and she plans on beating out her new records.

“I’m just going to try my best to get a personal record and gain as much experience as I can while I’m there to do even better next season,” Johnson said.

Crosstown softball to open season

The first game of the season will pit crosstown rivals Seabreeze Lady Sandcrabs against the Mainland Lady Buccaneers at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at Mainland.

From top to bottom, Seabreeze will send out a new team, starting at the head coach position. Former head coach Tarisa Craig-Craggy stepped down to assistant, and Alan Hand was put in her place.

Hand has already deemed this season a rebuilder, after losing many of his top players from last year, including Taylor Lee, who committed to play at Drexel.

With this projected year of rebuilding, Mainland hopes to capitalize by beating its rival for the first time in at least seven years.

Sandcrabs to host preseason baseball tournament

The Sandcrabs will kick off their baseball season with two games in two days. They will first play Flagler Palm Coast on Wednesday, and then New Smyrna Beach Thursday, both preseason games in the Harry Wendelstedt, Jr. Memorial Classic at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. Their season will officially begin Tuesday, when they play FPC Feb. 9, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

Seabreeze soccer comes to end

The Seabreeze boys, like the girls, were eliminated in the Elite Eight by the Tayler (Pierson) Wildcats 4-0 on Tuesday, Feb. 2, in Pierson. The Wildcats had also beaten the Sandcrabs in the district championship. Last season, Taylor beat Seabreeze in both the district final and the Elite Eight. The Sandcrabs finish their season with a 17-6-2 record.

More crosstown action

In tennis, the Seabreeze Lady Sandcrabs will square off against the Mainland Buccaneers at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at Mainland, and the boys will play each other at the same time, on the same day, at Seabreeze.
